An Urban Feline Pilgrimage

The London
Cat Trail

A curated, kinetic journey across ten stone and bronze felines — Dick Whittington to Street Cat Bob — woven through London's coffee culture and most storied landmarks.

The Manifesto

London's pavement is a gallery of feline history. Each stop is a chapter — a stone paw, a steaming cup, a landmark in the periphery. Walk it like a cat: curious, unhurried, and always aware of the shadows.

Dick Whittington's Cat

Highgate Hill Archway

Dick Whittington's Cat commemorates the real fourteenth-century Lord Mayor of London whose legendary cat supposedly made his fortune by ridding a ship of rats. The stone cat has watched over Highgate Hill since 1964, perched where young Dick supposedly turned back at the sound of Bow Bells. It's worth the climb for the statue, the views across London, and a quiet coffee in nearby Archway.

Trim the Cat

Outside Euston Station Euston

Trim was the first cat to circumnavigate Australia, sailing with explorer Matthew Flinders in the early 1800s and earning a book-length tribute from his devoted master. The bronze outside Euston station, unveiled in 2014, captures Trim mid-stride on the ship's rope. It's a fitting welcome to one of London's busiest stations and a lovely excuse to visit the British Library next door.

Hodge the Cat

Gough Square Chancery Lane

Hodge was the beloved cat of Dr Samuel Johnson, the dictionary-maker who lived and worked in Gough Square. Johnson personally bought oysters for Hodge rather than send a servant, and the 1997 bronze shows the cat sitting on a copy of the dictionary beside an oyster shell. It's a small, peaceful square and the closest you'll get to the great lexicographer's domestic life.

Humphrey the Cat

Whitehall Westminster

Humphrey served as the real Chief Mouser to the Prime Minister at Number 10 Downing Street from 1989 to 1997, working under Thatcher, Major and Blair. The Whitehall area is steeped in political history, and a short walk takes in Horse Guards Parade and the Cenotaph. It's a working-government corner of London with more feline heritage than most tourists realise.

Kaspar the Cat

The Savoy Embankment

Kaspar is a three-foot black wooden cat at The Savoy, sculpted in 1927 by Basil Ionides to ward off the ill fortune of a dinner party of thirteen. He's brought out with his own place setting and served a full course whenever a thirteenth guest is needed. Seeing him is a rare glimpse into one of London's most storied hotels and its theatrical superstitions.

The Carreras building was a 1920s cigarette factory whose Black Cat brand gave Camden its most flamboyant Egyptian-revival facade. Cats flanking the entrance nod to the goddess Bastet, and the restored building is now a striking office block. It's an essential stop for anyone who loves architectural oddities and a market-town vibe.

The civet cats on Kensington's old Edwardian shopfronts hint at a trade once essential to the perfume industry, when civet musk was prized for centuries. These carved guardians are relics of a vanished era of exotic apothecaries on High Street Ken. They sit minutes from Kensington Gardens and the Design Museum, making for a refined afternoon of cats and culture.
